Tourist Talk

We enter our scene in media res in a Midtown delicatessen, 9 AM on a Monday morning, as three Fat Midwestern Biddies stand hunched over, staring with utter perplexity at something behind the deli counter glass.  Behind them gather annoyed New York businesspeople, just wanting to grab a bagel and a coffee and get to their fucking jobs, quickly gathering like sediment at the end of a river delta as the biddies struggle to order some breakfast.  Finally, one of the Biddies gets the gumption to question a worker, to have him clear up her confusion:

“What is…lox?”

  1. What was it, a bagel? lox? cream cheese? Surely they have those things in Montana.
